the romney campaign has been running against obama. he rere pepeated the lie to cnn last week. there was a moment back in may when it became a scandal that a pro-mitt romney super pac had even been pitched the idea of bringing jeremiah wright back as an attack on president obama. that ad campaign was never picked up by the pro-romney super pac or the romney campaign itself. it was a scandal they had even been asked to pick up something that racially charged. but a few months later, the campaign picked up the welfare nonsense campaigning in a way that's divorced from the facts but that's loaded with enough sub text to knock you over in a still wind. and they picked up newt gingrich surrogate in his food stamps attack. no and now fox news and the pro-mitt romney drudge report just are going full bore on the jeremiah wright stuff, as o of right now. in 2008 the john mccain had a choice about whether or not they should campaign on really ove overtly racial appeals. things like the jeremiah wright attack. they chose not to in 2008. if the romney campaign is going to keep going ther

and if they would have known that, they never would have elected him. the efforts to make president obama's race sound like new news and to make it sound shocking are right now ramping up aggressively. last week, for example, here was newt gingrich going all out with it. if you want to make a racial reference bingo card from the '70s, the terms are basketball, performer, the word rhythm, and you'll want a special box for references to the president as sleepy or lazy. >> i'm assuming that some rhythm to barack obama that the rest of us don't understand. whether he needs large amounts of rest, whether he needs to go play basketball for awhile. i don't watch espn. i don't know what his rhythms are, but this is a guy who is a brilliant performer who may well get reelected at the present date. and who frankly happens to be a partial part-time president. he really is like e the substitute referees in the sense that he's not a real president. he doesn't do things presidents do. he doesn't worry about things presidents do. but he has the white house. he has enormous power. he'll go down in history as pr

he was on "meet the press" with david gregory a couple weeks ago and said i wouldn't repeal everything in obama occasion i would keep popular elements and within 24 hours his aides were saying, not exactly. i find that a little confusing. he has to figure out a way to have a consistent message that is credible and appeals to the swing voters he needs, especially white women. that's his target tonight. >> i think they pull that back -- >> karen, haven't we seen this process throughout this campaign? mr. romney says something, 24 hours later, the campaign goes out and says, he didn't mean that. he meant something else. >> here's the problem, every time romney thinks off the top of his head of something, which is probably why he was practicing zingers, he says something his campaign has to walk back. that's the greatest danger for him in his campaign. the reason they walked back that 17,000 cap comment f you looked at the statement from the campaign very carefully talked about that the president -- that governor romney, no kind of redistributive, you know, idea. i think wealthy

senior romney advisors this past week. one advisor said to me there are three things, three kinds of people we need to talk to, three ds he calls it, the dissatisfied, disem pointed and disenchanted with barack obama, number one. and that what mitt romney has to do is convince people that four years from now a mitt romney presidency will be better for their personal lives. they understand on the likability question of which the president beats mitt romney so handily, they're not about to convince all these people suddenly to turn around and say, oh, we like mitt romney more than we like president obama. what they're going to try and do is say you like him enough and he can do the job and he's better able to fix things. so he's not going to try and be bill clinton here, i feel your pain. but what he's going to try to do is say i'm focused on your concerns. >> can a debate like tonight's debate really change the direction of this campaign? >> i think it can accelerate or decrease momentum one way or another. and i went back and looked at 2004 for example when you had john kerry and
